So, just a summary, Devilman 1/2 lite is a 50 mile race... 0.8 mile swim / 40.3 mile bike / 8.8 mile run == 50 miles
This was my first race with my new coach, Todd AND my first race with my first TT (time trial) bike, the QR (a cherry red Quintana Roo)
4 am ... woke up to drive down to Cumberland County with tri buddies. Made myself a mug of espresso with my stovetop cafetel, and toasted up some seeded bread with a spread of mascarpone and fig jam. TEMP: 44 degrees
4: 30 am we were off towards Jersey. It was SO COLD morning of. I did not want to even take off my sweater for body marking.
8:30 am: Got in the water at 8:28, only 2 minutes before the gun went off for the start--barely enough time to get water in my wetsuit. I dunked my head under right before the gun went off. Brought my head out of the water and we had started.
Started in the gaggle of women because I thought I could race it hard...I was confident. Kind of regret it. Freaked out in the first 100 m, and had to Tarzan it for a little while. Swallowed a ton of water, started feeling sick, had trouble catching my breath. Got kicked in the face before the first 300 m, tried to reposition my goggles, got fogged out, dipped them in the water, then lost my left eye contact--and my left eye is my good eye. I sighted first two buoys with a tarzan swim, then just followed heads. The orange buoys started looked the same color as the pink swim caps with my clouded eye. Really felt into the swim and comfy after the first 400 yards, then I just started swimming, breathing, remembering 11 and 1 hand positioning.
got out of the water, felt defeated, like everyone had passed me, belly full of lake water.
SWIM: 24:45 (74 rank)
Ran to T1, stripped top of my wetsuit off while running. Felt loose jogging to the T1, plopped myself on the ground near where I thought my rack was, only to discover my rack was one away. Tore my wetsuit off of my legs, ran over to the right rack, put on my race belt, my bolero over those slippery arms, slid into my shoes, packed my nutrition in the back of my kit, threw a couple of peanut butter pretzels in my mouth, clipped helmet on, glasses on, gloves on---felt like I could use them for the cold ride. Ran out with my bike
T1: 03:41 (110 rank)
Started the bike, felt a cross wind--uncomfortable--didn't use heart rate cause my chest was too wet to register. thought i would be going faster--18.5 mph mostly, held steady 90-100 cadence. Really fought the wind. passed a ton of people.
Hydrated well on the bike, had a whole gatoraid in the first 25 miles. Also ate nearly all of my pb & banana sandwich.
I think I avg'd better speed second lap in.
BIKE: 2:09:28 (102nd)

Walking the QR back into T2 |
Passed a ton of people. trying to knock out all the women when I realized I could be in top 10...
Run: 1:06:01 (46)
Todd, my coach told me to floor it. I knew there had to be fewer than 15 women ahead of me, so best game plan, pass as many as I could.
Splits avg's 7:30. Not negative, as coach wanted, but still avg'd well.
